In 2023, a South East based farm contracted a new meter connection following site development. The initial capacity requirements for the site were overestimated, leading to higher standing charges. They approached CLA Energy Services for advice on how to optimise their setup and manage costs effectively.


The challenge

The Distribution Network Operator (DNO) required the capacity to remain fixed for a minimum of 12 months after the initial connection. This policy meant the client had to commit to higher charges temporarily. Once the site became tenanted, the client needed support in reassessing their capacity needs and reducing unnecessary costs.

We worked closely with the client throughout the 12-month period to monitor their site’s actual energy demand:

  • Capacity adjustment: After confirming that the site’s requirements were lower than the initial estimates, we facilitated a reduction in capacity to an appropriate level.

  • Lower standing charges: This adjustment directly reduced the standing charges associated with the meter.

The capacity optimisation delivered measurable cost improvements:


  • Substantial cost savings: A 68.98% reduction in standing charges compared to the initial quote before the reduction was implemented.

  • Right-sized capacity: The meter now reflects the site’s actual energy needs, eliminating unnecessary charges.

  • Improved financial efficiency: The adjusted setup ensures ongoing cost savings without compromising operational flexibility.
